Enhanced Concrete Placement: Integral Color

When working with wood, you find 2 very different characters: framers & trim carpenters. Concrete is no different: there are placement teams & artisan teams. Our artisan teams often add value to others’ placement projects by taking over the parts that demand a higher attention to detail. Integral color is pigment added to an entire batch of wet concrete: using it correctly requires some math, careful measuring, and tricks to increase concrete slump without adding water.

In this project, we made samples, specified the loading to get to that color, sourced material, added it to the truck, and had admixtures ready to help the concrete placement team successfully install this whether they’ve done it before or not.

This driveway project on Applehead Island demanded a steely, intentional grey. Using Butterfield Uni-Mix® in Charcoal (U-28) at 80% of max. loading, we were able to get a much better and more controlled grey that will not fade like a paint-like “stain”.
